Welcome to the Evening League Time Trial series.
The series is being jointly organised by Deeside Thistle and Aberdeen Wheelers Cycling Clubs under the auspices of Cycling Time Trials. The series is “closed” which means that entry is generally limited to all first call members of those clubs. Some second call members and occasional guests may also be eligible to ride, but there are conditions in these cases (contact the organiser for further information).
REGISTRATION
Both AWCC and DTCC are affiliated to CTT (DTCC under the name Deeside Thistle Cycling Club SCIO) and to enter the series, as well as other “open” races during the season, you need only to register with CTT on their website as a member of your respective club.
RACE CALENDAR, START SHEET AND RESULTS SHEET
These will all be displayed on the CTT website
RACE ENTRY
Once registered you will be able to enter races in the series on the CTT website. Each race costs £3 to enter. You can enter a single event, several events, or even the whole series at one time. If you enter an event which is subsequently cancelled or from which you need to withdraw for whatever reason (provided sufficient warning is given) there is a system of reimbursement. We accept entries on the CTT website up to race start time. Entries up to 10pm on the Sunday before the race will automatically appear on the start sheet. After that time cut off you will not just have to enter the race, as above, but you will also need to contact the race organiser. For the time being, Youths and Juniors will have a different system for entering (contact the organiser for further information).
COURSE DETAILS
These are local races for local riders and we expect all riders to know and have ridden the courses beforehand. Responsibity for negotiating the course safely lies solely with the rider. The course at Fintray has a number of hazards which may take new riders by surprise – be warned. GPX maps of all courses are displayed on the CTT website, as well as detailed risk assessments and you are advised to consult these before riding.
COMMUNICATION
Communication between the organisers and riders will, primarily, be via the Evening League SPOND app. Download SPOND and when prompted enter the code RSNEP, after which you will be admitted. Late cancellations, course alterations, important safety details and race briefings will be communicated in this way. If you do not have a phone which can download apps, please let the organiser know and we will try to make alternative arrangements.
RULES
Riders must be aware that road safety, for riders themselves, for other road users and for pedestrians, is our number one priority. The highway code must be observed at all times. You must not cross the central white line. Marshals cannot direct traffic; they are there to warn riders that they are approaching a potentially hazardous situation and, by their presence alone, to warn motorists that an event is in progress. Two of our courses (Fintray 9 and Garlogie 8) pass through 30mph zones; the speed limit must be observed and riders should watch out for parked cars and pedestrians. One of our courses crosses a pedestrian crossing in Echt (Garlogie 8) and there pedestrians have right of way.
All CTT race rules apply (summarised in their handbook on the website). I will, here, highlight some aspects which have caused problems in the past and which are of particular importance. ALL RIDERS MUST DISPLAY A FRONT WHITE LIGHT AND A REAR RED LIGHT. We advise that the rear light should be flashing. NO LIGHTS, NO RACE – you have been warned. We run separate road bike and time trial bike competitions. What specifies a road bike is defined exactly in the CTT handbook. Both lights and road bike compliance will be checked on the start line. Age appropriate rules for maximum gearing for Youths and Juniors will be applied.
Overall results will be on time alone and compiled in four competitions – road bike and time trial bike in both female and open categories. In each of the four competitions, a riders’ best six results will count towards the overall score – the fastest rider on the night scoring 80 points, the second 79 and so on. The individual clubs (DTCC and AWCC) will use the results to decide their individual, internal, club time trial championships as usual.
VOLUNTEERING
These events cannot go on without helpers. We have had to specify, as a condition of getting Police permission for the events to go ahead, the number and position of race marshals. It follows that if we do not get a sufficient number of volunteers the races cannot go ahead. Over the season we will need around 90 volunteers. Fortunately, we have a few non riders who turn out regularly to help, which eases the load. We do not expect Youth and Junior riders to volunteer, but we are very grateful if a family member does volunteer on their behalf. If every other rider volunteers once, that may or may not be enough. For that reason, we have a rule that everyone who rides 1-5 events is obliged to volunteer once (not gets 5 “free” rides and then has to volunteer – there is a subtle difference) and anyone who rides 6 or more must volunteer twice. It follows that you must volunteer twice if you wish to register 6 events to compete in the overall series and if you do not, at the discretion of the organisers, your 6th event may not count towards your final standing.
FIRST AID
Official first aid will be present. The first aider will have a defibrillator. Hopefully, neither will be necessary, but you never know. This presents us with a logistical problem, as time trial fields are, by necessity, spread out across the whole course – which is where you all come in. The first aider may be in a specific location or may be mobile around the circuit. All marshals will have a phone number, but accidents can happen anywhere around the circuit. Fortunately, we have many potential observers out on the course. If you are the first rider to come across an incident which may require first aid, please stop and offer immediate assistance. If the casualty can be left safely then cycle on to the next marshal and ask them to contact first aid. If the casualty cannot be safely left, then wait for the next rider to come along and enlist their help. Of course, in the event of a severe accident / incident call 999 asap – either with your own or a borrowed phone and then contact our local first aid through a marshal, as above.
